Why have a legal contract

Create a legal contract at the beginning of your client relationship, before any deliverables are provided. This ensures that all terms are agreed upon prior to the execution of any tasks. A signed document outlining the planned work protects both you and the client and creates a clear foundation for your partnership.

What to include in legal contracts

  • Names of the client(s) and you, the designer

  • Project description

  • Usage rights

Fee arrangements

  • usage

  • consultation

  • alteration

  • travel

  • cancellation

  • expense estimation or maximums

Payment terms

  • schedule for advances

  • reimbursement for billed expenses

  • royalty terms and rates

  • monthly service charges for late payment

Transfer of ownership details

  • copyright notice requirements

  • placement of the credit line

  • releases for names and photos being used in the work
